[Doors open at 5.45 pm but please ensure you arrive prior to 6.00 pm when public lift access ceases]

Dr Richard Reid, who is well known to Aisling members, is a distinguished researcher, writer and raconteur on the Irish in Australia. He was guest speaker at our St Patrick’s Day dinner in 2011, when he spoke about Not Just Ned, the exhibition on Irish Australia at the National Museum of Australia, of which he was the senior curator. In his upcoming talk to the Aisling he will speak about Lord Belmore, Governor of New South Wales 1868-1872, who was in office at the time of Henry O’Farrell’s attempted assassination of Prince Alfred (the second son of Queen Victoria) at Clontarf, Sydney in 1868, and who during his term as governor travelled extensively throughout the colony. Belmore owned estates in County Tyrone and County Fermanagh, including Castle Coole, where he died in 1913. Dr Reid’s illustrated talk will include the O’Farrell shooting, Lord Belmore’s travels in NSW and objects from the period which are in the current Lord Belmore’s collection at Castle Coole and which have not seen the light of day.
