Scoil Gheimhridh Sydney 2010, 11-14 June

Seventy-seven people from across Australia came together for classes and activities in Irish to learn or improve their Irish at the Scoil Gheimhridh Sydney 2010.

We wish to thank the Irish Consulate in Sydney, Irish National Association of Australasia and Muiris Ó Súilleabháin, whose generous donations helped keep the costs down.

Special thanks to our wonderful volunteer teachers who came from Adelaide, Newcastle, Perth, Canberra, Melbourne, Wollongong and Sydney.

Participants voted the Scoil a big success. In a survey returned by 50 of the 77 attendees, 100 percent  said they learnt more Irish and would recommend the weekend to others.  The most liked aspects of the weekend were the teaching, elective classes, and the participants' own concert at the end of the weekend when people sang, recited or performed in Irish.

Best wishes for the Scoil  were received Foras na Gaelige; Gaelscéal;  Joanne from County Clare; Conradh na Gaeilge, and BBC radio program Blas. Gaelscéal, issue no 12, page 6, included an article on the Scoil.

Photos from the Scoil are on-line at 'Photos 2009-2010'.

For a report, as Gaeilge, by Máirtín Mag Uidhir in Nuacht24 click here. Read the Irish Echo, 30 June to 13 July 2010,page 13 for a report in English.

In 2011 the Scoil is on 10-13 June in Sydney.

John Spillane concert in Irish

Congratulations to Artúr for setting in train the arrangements for John Spillane to hold a Sydney concert in Irish. Lots of us enjoyed John singing as GaeilgeImageImageImage at the Harp Hotel Tempe on 14 June right after the Scoil Gheimhridh.

Nine new books have come from An Siopa Gaeilge. See Áine to borrow them.
